Maybe you’d like to read the back story. Maybe you’d like to learn about how a fellow blogger stopped writing last year until a certain amount of people had purchased Sam Baker’s album Cotton.
Maybe you’d like to watch the video. Maybe the words will make you cry. Maybe you’d like to read about how difficult it was to find them. Maybe you’ll adore those stirring strings. Maybe the piano at the end will get you all caught up inside.
It’s all remarkable stuff, and my words alone just don’t do it justice.
Sam Baker has some dates coming up in the US next week, as well as some festival bookings during the US summer.
Thanks to Muzzle Of Bees for pointing me in the direction of Sam Baker in Volume 35 of their excellent weekly podcast.

Hi Agnes, what an extraordinary song. Thanks for posting and the tip on Sam Baker. With that song in my head I’m going off to read a good book now and all is right with the world (though Sam’s own story is pretty harrowing).

Loved it… tried to find the lyrics. Couldn’t find a link. (any ideas)
The female harmony is so poignant….

I couldn’t find one either Pedro, I did look for a while. Might have to buy the album and read the liner notes! Or sit down and transcribe them yourself – I remember doing that with my Walkman back in the day. Stop, rewind, play again, stop, rewind…

You’re right…the snd says it all 😦
My cardboard sign says its time to pray
My sign says I need booze
One says I can’t walk no more
One sign says I need shoes
One says if I had a dollar, if I had I wouldn’t of lost my crown
One says if I had a horse (pause)… I’d ride for higher ground…
Hey Hey
Hey Hey…. on the corner every day
(piano solo)
Thanks agnes

Once again, amazing. Simple, but very strong images.
Glad you like this one Pedro – I had a feeling you might!
