** The Adelaide date was NOT mentioned on Regina’s website, but is confirmed on the Adelaide Entertainment Centre website so I’m guessing that it must be a later addition to the tour lineup. See AFM? Sometimes people do come to Adelaide… eventually!

Sydney’s got that harbour…

I’m in Melbourne this week house sitting. Tomorrow I plan to tram it into the city and hit up all the shops that we don’t have in my country town, like JB HiFi and Mag Nation and Borders. Although I won’t actually buy anything in Borders – I will browse and find something wonderful to read over coffee, and then bugger off and buy it cheaper somewhere else. Cue evil laugh…

This week’s photos will all be Melbourne shots I take as I’m hotfooting it around this beautiful city. There’s something of a rivalry between Melbourne and Sydney as to which city is the prettiest, and while Sydney is gorgeous with all its harbourside views and whatnot, Melbourne still has a pull over me that Sydney never will. Mind you, the fact that I spent most of my childhood in Melbourne, head down there on weekends fairly regularly and have only been to Sydney maybe a dozen times… well that might have something to do with it too. Maybe.

Sydney’s got that harbour
And Adelaide’s got those churches
Brisbane’s very hot a lot of the time
And Perth’s very far away
Hey-hey-hey

Melbourne – Scared Weird Little Guys (beware – cultural references ahead!)

The above three photos were all taken today, by the way. Melbourne is also known for its highly unpredictable weather patterns – please note the differences in sky colour in each picture. These were all taken within a half hour or so, during which I was bathed in sunlight, whipped by wind and drenched in rain. I’m forced to say it, though please rest assured that I employ an exasperated tone of affection – bloody Melbourne!

Summer In The City – Regina Spektor (I’d forgotten just how good this is!)

The Man Of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts – Sufjan Stevens (no real relevance, but I’ve been listening to it this evening and it’s wonderful)

You would think that, despite the fact that my work this week is relief teaching and nowhere near as stressful as teaching full time, I would be more than happy to get up for work in the morning. Sadly though, I still have the same dull feeling of dread that I had last year when I think about the fact that I have to get up at sparrows and face a gloomy winter morning instead of snuggling deeper under the covers and having ‘just another five minutes’.

On the upside though, I get to rock up at 8.30 and nick off as soon as the hometime bell goes at 3:20. No meetings, no homework to mark, no lessons to prepare. Still, I reckon school shouldn’t start until 10:30, at the earliest. Much more civil.

Here’s a tune that has been colouring this grey afternoon as I toast my toes on the woodstove and cuddle deep into the couch cushions.

My third taste of Regina’s new album Far is much more promising than ‘Laughing With’ and ‘Blue Lips’ I think. Though the album is streaming over at NPR, I’m holding off for now until I can buy the proper CD. ‘Folding Chair’ is playful and catchy with a couple of lines that made me laugh out loud the first time I heard them – an instant winner in my book.

Don’t make frowns…you silly clown.

Caspian

Are you guys sick of Regina yet? Have posted a few of her tracks lately. If you are sick of her, ignore this post and continue on with your non-Regina infected life, with my blessing.

I saw Prince Caspian yesterday and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. There were a couple of instances where I had to scoff, like when they brought the White Witch back for a token five minutes and when they had all the kissy love stuff going on with Caspian and Susan, but I managed to keep it to myself. I did like the battle stuff, especially when they attacked the castle and the scenery was beautiful too.

To top it all off, the song that kicked in at the end as the Pevensie kids left Narnia was a Regina song that I hadn’t heard before. While it’s a lot more ‘straight’ than her usual stuff, it’s beautiful nonetheless and showcases her unique voice. Get that cap, get it quick! (That one was for you Elspeth).

Part II of what I’ve decided to make a sporadic series here at It All Started.

I love a quirky song title. I think it shows creativity, eccentricity and oodles of personality. There’s loads of oddball goodness in this post that I’ve dug up from the recesses of my Itunes library.

Although I’ve posted tracks by Regina Spektor and the Mountain Goats recently in other contexts, I couldn’t leave them out of this post. I mean, ‘Aching To Pupate’…who could ignore that one?

King Of Carrot Flowers Part 1 – Neutral Milk Hotel

Don’t Fall In Love If You Want To Die In Peace – Comet Gain

3 Letters Between Perfection and Disaster – Like Yesterday

Jeanne, If You’re Ever In Portland – Casiotone For The Painfully Alone

Aching To Pupate – Regina Spektor

Marduk T-Shirt Men’s Room Incident – Mountain Goats

On this day in 1279 the Song Dynasty in China came to end. How do I know this, you ask?

When searching for a theme for this post, I visited my old friend Wikipedia to find out if anything interesting had happened on March 19 throughout history. The only thing that grabbed my attention was the downfall of the Song Dynasty. I wondered how many tracks I had lurking in Itunes with the word ‘song’ or ‘end’ in them.

Quite a few as it turns out – here’s a quick sample.

‘O Song’ is highly recommended, as is ‘Adam Hillsong’ by comedian Tim Minchin – a very clever ode to Adam Hills, host of the excellent Aussie TV show Spicks and Specks, and performed at the end of an episode in 2006. The ‘monopodial embrace’ line refers to Adam’s artificial right foot.

Adam Hillsong – Tim Minchin

O Song (Live) – Augie March

Hotel Song – Regina Spektor

Made Up Love Song #43 – The Guillemots

Songwriter – Van Morrison Removed by request

Childhood Songs – Billy Connolly

Love Me Like The World Is Ending – Ben Lee

Never-Ending Story – Within Temptation

Better Be Home Soon – Crowded House

Classic song from a classic band.

Big Blue Above – Kavisha Mazella

Featured on the excellent Australian drama series ‘SeaChange’.

I saw you cast your net up to the sky

You’re catching the words as they fly

Spray ’em with black ink upon a white page

Wrap ’em and bind ’em with your joy and rage

Braille – Regina Spektor

A track from the wonderful Regina Spektor, who inspired the naming of this blog. Go here to check out the full lyrics – they’re excellent.

Brain Damage – The Waifs

Adding to the mainly Aussie flavour of this post are folk outfit The Waifs. I’m going out to damage my brain…

Check out the rest of the alphabet here.
