Damn, I love this song. I think it’s something to do with the simple chord progression and the half-laugh in the vocals. Wonderful stuff.
Sweet Jane – The Velvet Underground
Like all great songs, many people have had a shot at covering it – Mott the Hoople, The Sugarcubes and The Kooks, to name a few. The Cowboy Junkies also recorded a version that Lou Reed apparently described as “the best and most authentic version I have ever heard”. Check it out below.
Sweet Jane (The Velvet Underground Cover) – Cowboy Junkies
Bonus mp3 – this version’s all about the guitar
Sweet Jane (Live in Paris 1974) – Lou Reed
And lastly, Italy’s Poddighe Power Trio also do a version that’s pretty faithful to the original
(That image rocks, right? I found it at Goodnight Gracie, a blog dedicated to reviews of old rock n’ roll records)
This is an amazing song, and amazing cover and you’ve done an amazing job with this blog!
Never gets old. The song, the man, the band….and the photo is just the icing on the cake.
Great stuff! But check out Reed’s live version on “Rock n Roll Animal” – phenomenal guitar work!
Ryan the Robot – why thank you! Thanks for stopping by.
Slantrhyme – agreed!
Curt – I’ll add that to my list of internetty things to do tonight, thanks!
I love the Cowboy Junkies cover. One of those rare covers that is nearly as good as the original. I have a couple more covers of this track that I’ll send your way.
AFM – That would be wonderful, I looked for more but the Cowboy Junkies one was the only one I found. Would definitely love to check out anything else you have, thanks!
