I don’t get excited about free EPs just because they’re free – this one’s actually bloody good as well!

Scotland’s Cancel The Astronauts have been on my radar for a while now, and they recently made their EP I Am The President Of Your Fanclub available for free download on their bandcamp page. I’ve uploaded a ton of tunes to my iPod these last couple of days, but these are the ones I keep coming back to.

‘I Am The President Of Your Fanclub (And Last Night I Followed You Home)’ is the first track I heard and remains my favourite, complete with playful lyrics and tons of energy. You’ll notice a lot of synth action also – something that I don’t actively seek in the music that I listen to, but that I love in the hands of Cancel The Astronauts. In fact, much of the EP features this instrumentation, and it’s good fun.

‘Country Song’ sounds nothing like a country song – the heavy synth introduction may just tip you off here. It’s also damn catchy.

‘Late In The City’ features a playful sound takes precedence on the first few run-throughs, before closer listening reveals lyrics of heartbreak and lines like ‘I despise you truly, you’ve ruined my life’. It also contains a melody that remains in my head long after I’ve turned off the music maker and moved on to other projects. You’ll know the one I mean.

I defy you not to bop along to ‘Love Somebody’, and ‘Let’s Go Expo’ wraps up the EP with a heavier sound, starting slow and building to a frantic close, capped by a synth fadeout.

Conclusion: Cancel The Astronauts free EP I Am The President Of Your Fanclub is a fun debut and well worth a listen. Well don’t just stand there…
