The Cat Empire are a six piece Aussie outfit that are, by their own admission, difficult to categorise. Which is awesome. However, the general concensus according to Wikipedia seems to be a mixture of jazz, ska, funk and rock with some serious Latin influences thrown in.
In addition to their regular members, The Cat Empire also regularly features The Empire Horns, who are pretty much full time members anyway. They have also collaborated with a staggering list of guest musicians and quite often have over 20 performers on stage at their live gigs, including the official Empire Dancers.
Their songs are a high energy fun fest and you can’t help but sing and dance along. What I really like about them is their sense of humour – listen to the lyrics of ‘Hello’ especially.
Unfortunately, I’ve not had the opportunity to see them live but I hear that their gigs are absolutely fantastic. They’re currently touring Australia at the moment, along with The Beautiful Girls, Blue King Brown and Ash Grunwald:
If you can’t get to see them, here’s a few tracks to enjoy instead. Their cover of ‘Hotel California’ was recorded in French for a 2005 Triple J compilation called Like A Version.
