Having said that though, every song is highly recommended and should be checked out by your good self immediately!

Regular readers may be aware that I’ve been lapping up DeVotchKa’s latest A Mad and Faithful Telling and am still wrapped up in their romantic gypsy vibe.

Undone – DeVotchKa

Canada’s New Pornographers are playing at Melbourne’s The Corner in October. This track comes from their latest release ‘Challengers’.

Unguided – New Pornographers

These guys are from Iowa but that’s about as much as I know about them. The old school opening guitar riff on this track is very cool and a good ooooh-ooooh sing-a-long is always a winner in my book.

Upper Darby – The Poison Control Centre

This one is a slow burning tale of regret that I’d forgotten I had. Strings, xylophones and a little bit of synth action from this DIY bedroom music maker.

Used Books, Torn Pages – Jon Athans Project

The Waifs write some seriously evocative lyrics.

Now she’s thinking of the red soil and those mango trees
Well in her mind she’s still splashing round down on Cable Beach
And her eyes are as rich and as far away
As the sunset there
But she’s not taking in a word I say
So I might as well be talking to my self

Take it in, take it all in
Now is the time that will not come again
Take it in take it all in
This is the day and its here for the living

Smell the roses folks…

Take It In – The Waifs

The National. I bloody love ‘em. It’s been a while since I posted anything by these lovely fellas, so here’s a wonderful track from these melancholy yet uplifting New Yorkers.

Tall Saint – The National

Shivering cold, I woke up in water
and wrapped myself around the toilet seat.
I spoke in tongues and took all my clothes off.
The tops of my fingers
touched the tops of my toes

Ahh…the imagery.

Ten Dead Dogs – Wild Sweet Orange

Aussie folk singer Paul Kelly is the quintessential story teller. Full of pathos and keen observations, his lyrics are currently used as a VCE text here in Australia. I grew up listening to Paul Kelly and this track about a young couple struggling to maintain their relationship was a staple in my musical diet.

They got married early, never had no money
Then when he got laid off they really hit the skids
He started up his drinking, then they started fighting
He took it pretty badly, she took both the kids
She said: “I’m not standing by, to watch you slowly die
So watch me walking, out the door, out the door, out the door”

To Her Door – Paul Kelly

Speaking of my early musical diet, Van Morrison was also a constant, even more so than Paul Kelly. This live track featuring back up singer Brian Kennedy (a solo artist in his own right now) is absolutely gorgeous.

Brooklyn based rock outfit The Hold Steady continue to grow on me. This is the lead single off their latest release Stay Positive, and it’s fantastic.

It started when we were dancin’
It got heavy when we got to the bathroom.
We didn’t go back to her place,
We went to some place where she cat-sits.
She said, “I know I look tired, but everything’s fried, here in Memphis.”
Man, they want to know exactly which bathroom…
Dude, does it make any difference? It can’t be important…

Sequestered In Memphis – The Hold Steady

Saw Amos Lee on an episode of Live From Abbey Road last week. He was good, and seemed to be a very earnest man. I reckon he needs to lighten up a bit though, he was pretty serious. Smile Amos! Actually scratch that. I hate it when people tell me to smile. If I wanna be cranky, I will be, dammit! So on second thoughts, do what you like Amos. It makes no never mind to me.

Shout Out Loud – Amos Lee

I haven’t heard a lot from Swedish singer-songwriter Loney, Dear (Emil Svanängen) but I like the beguiling sweetness he conveys with his voice and a few simple chords. Lovely.

Sinister In A State Of Hope – Loney, Dear

Zookeeper is a six piece from Texas, USA and this track is about as infectious as you can get. Great piano and a fun beat. Love it.

Snow In Berlin – Zookeeper

It’s been a while since I posted a Van song. This one is a warmfuzzy and makes appearances on all kinds of soundtracks, including French Kiss and Bridget Jones’ Diary. I knew it before those movies though. Promise.

Someone Like You – Van Morrison Removed by request

A live track from the reggae/ska master.

Stir It Up – Bob Marley

Two Hours Traffic are a four piece indie rock band from Prince Edward Island, Canada. This track starts off pretty upbeat, but has a neat little breakdown in the middle that completely changes the feel of the whole thing.

Sure Can Start – Two Hours Traffic

I had things I had been meaning to say
But in the dazzling winter sunlight
I could feel them melt away
And through the warm radio static
I couldn’t hear my stage directions

I’ve had entire conversations like this, where I’m filled with things to say, yet end up saying nothing. Frustration and hopelessness in five short, perfect lines. Genius.

So Desperate – The Mountain Goats

From Aussie band George comes the perfect track to accompany sitting by the fire on a cold and bitter night as the rain patters down on the old tin roof.

Rain – George

Silverchair – another Aussie group. These guys took off locally when I was in high school and their international profile continues to grow. I really like the direction these guys have taken, and this track is a perfect example of their new sound.

Reflections of A Sound – Silverchair

An attention grabbing opener I can see by the look on your face…that you’ve got ring worm is followed by a heartfelt platitude…you’re very lucky to have ringworm…cos you may have had….something else. Touching.

Ring Worm – Van Morrison Removed by request

I don’t know much about these guys, apart from the fact that they’re an indie rock outfit from Chicago and have toured with Wilco, Architecture in Helsinki, Rilo Kiley and Andrew Bird. They’re also responsible for ‘Climbing Up Fire Escapes’, which I posted here and is on regular ipod rotation at the moment.

River Ramble – Head of Femur

Gritty vocals and hungry, heavy chords from US blues-rock outfit the Heartless Bastards.

Runnin – Heartless Bastards

I have to confess though that I had to do some digging to find more than one or two Q tracks. And then I got bored. So there’s only a few here. And I’m even too slack to do a proper write up on them, which isn’t fair to you or to the artists. It’s especially unfair to myself, because I’m sullying the stellar reputation that I’ve built for always providing posts of biting intellect and dramatic intrigue. I am ashamed.

Paper Cups – Andy Whittle UK singer-songwriter Andy Whittle crafts acoustic gems that I find calming and easy to listen to. He has several dates booked in the UK in the next few months. See his website for details as well as 60 second samples of his debut album Old Fashioned Dream.

Pass It On (Live) – The Coral Another UK band, The Coral play a blend of psych/folk/rock. They’re also aiming to write film scores in the future. Their stuff is good – pass it on. (badoom-chhh…I’m here all week).

Peachy – Missy Higgins I was lucky enough to see Missy Higgins “before she was famous” at A Day On The Green at least four years ago. Now well known all over the globe, her popularity continues to grow.

Penny Lane – The Beatles This is my favourite Beatles song. It’s fun and peppy and I love the imagery.

People Turn Around – Delta Spirit Delta Spirit continue to score serious blog love…here’s some more.

Persuasion (Tim Finn Cover) – Stellar These guys are an Aussie coverband. I can’t find much info on them, but they covered Tim Finn’s ‘Persuasion’ on She Will Have Her Way: The Songs Of Neil & Tim Finn, and I reckon they did a pretty good job.

Poor Little Rich Boy (Live) – Regina Spektor The last Regina song I posted a few letters ago was pretty well received with you lot, so here’s another from her performance at Bonnaroo last year.

Pretty Mess – A Brief Smile Their latest album is Now We All Have Horns, released last year. Check out their website for more free downloads.

One And Only – Teitur Of a sweet but never sickly persuasion

One Of Us Is Gonna Die Young – The Ark Of a Swedish glam rock and catchy as hell persuasion
