I was standing on the surface of a perforated sphere
when the water filled every hole.
and thousands upon thousands made an ocean,
making islands where no island should go.
those people were overjoyed; they took to their boats.
I thought it less like a lake and more like a moat.
the rhythm of my footsteps crossing flood lands to your door have been silenced forever more.
the distance is quite simply much too far for me to row
it seems farther than ever before
I need you so much closer
Transatlanticism – Death Cab For Cutie
Thanks to Nigel for telling me to give DCFC a closer look!

oh agnes, that is my favorite dcfc song ever, favorite perhaps being the wrong word, however, as it shreds me and, in fact, i can’t actually listen to it anymore. but yes, it is my favorite.
i too had to give dcfc a closer look, i have a few of their cds but its more like i read the lyrics as poetry rather than hear the music. but this song is one of the good ones
Marcy I know what you mean – I have songs that are my favourites that I can’t listen to because they affect me so much! Totally understand.
Lainey, that’s not a bad way to enjoy them either. Makes you appreciate them more too when you know what they’re saying.
‘Transatlanticism’ really is a great Death Cab song, a great song full-stop. I’m so glad you like it, Agnes. I’m sure when I’m 80 years old I’ll still be listening to this song, and still loving it!
That’s the sign of a truly great song isn’t it, when you can imagine your octogenarian self still wanting to listen to it!
This is the first (and still one of the only) Death Cab songs I heard. It’s bloody lovely isn’t it?
Not a bad one to start with at all!
